An Open Letter to Spain

By ROBERTO Dr. CINTLI RODRIGUEZ

(Vea la versión en español a continuación.)

This open letter, specifically marks the 500-year anniversary of what historians call “The Conquest of Mexico” and it is directed to the government of, and to the King and Queen of, Spain.

It is regarding that small matter of that “conquest,” which also later included the rest of the Americas, and the subsequent 300 years of colonialism, plus 200 more years of cultural and economic imperialism.

But first, let me ask: your country still has royalty? The fact that your country clings on to medieval institutions, means you also inherit the sins of those institutions. The Church too, which was complicit in this colonial endeavor, also is responsible for many of those same and other sins.

It is probably easier for you to pay trillions of dollars in reparations for all the gold & silver your compatriots took since 1521, which began even earlier with your King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. The same regarding all the forced and slave labor used to enrich your nation and countrymen, including the building of your churches on virtually every block, often on top of our sacred sites.

And it is also easier for you to pay hundreds of trillions of dollars in reparations for the theft of the Americas, including the destruction of our cultural patrimony; our sacred sites, sacred objects and our ancient writings, some of which remain in European institutions.

There’s no amount that you could ever repay for the state-sponsored genocide of millions, regardless of the causes, nor for the women raped, that became your property, both Native and African.

Also, there’s no amount that you could ever repay for the reducciones, which resulted in the massive “theft of souls” by your co-conspirators, the Church, and in the corralling of peoples into missions, which also facilitated massive land theft. In this country, American Indians later underwent something similar, called boarding schools.

That’s the past, you say? Have reparations been paid up for all the above, including for the stealing of souls?

A different era, you say? That no one alive is responsible for, or has benefitted from, what occurred during those dark days?

What say you King and Queen? And dark days, you say? You mean like the “Dark Ages?”

Yes. We’ve always been aware that not only did you not send us your best, but that you also sent your leading thinkers in robes, steeped in medieval superstitions, bringing with them anti-science beliefs, believing that this continent was the abode of the devil and that the peoples were less than human.

You balk at apologizing – at the request of Mexico’s president – because you already did that in 1992? And you think apologies is what is wanted for the 500 years-worth of death, misery and destruction? Por favor!

That’s the “Black legend, you claim?” That your colonization was benign, that you saved us from hell and that it was not quite as terrible as what the other European powers did?

Stop. That’s your White legend. Who was worse is a laughable argument for yourselves. Also, before your peoples arrived, there was no devil here. You want to cling on to your superstitions, do so, but that’s nothing we need here. Apparently, they make for great children’s bedtime stories and a great way to keep the masses frightened and compliant.

You would rather misdirect and talk about human sacrifice? Sure, your peoples wiped out millions and you want to talk about morality? If you want to go there, on your next trip to the Vatican, please pass by the Colosseum first. That’s where you will learn about massive human sacrifice. Then we can talk, including about your Inquisitions and Crusades.

But the time for talking is long past; things stolen, remain stolen; time does not legitimate them. Thus, your government and the Church should do this jointly:

1) An apology, if made, must be accompanied with genuine restitution, such as, pay the full amount of gold/silver and for the forced and slave labor extracted from the Americas, with interest.

2) Return everything that was looted from the Americas that is today housed in European institutions.

3) Renounce all the Papal Bulls, Requerimientos and Doctrines of Discovery and other medieval proclamations that purportedly legitimated colonization everywhere.

4) Do the same for those laws that continue to keep the people poor on this continent, including, renounce that medieval dehumanizing catechism that shames our ancient traditions and beliefs as demonic.

5) Renounce your cultural claim on the Americas as we do not belong to you; instead, we remain, gente de maiz, including the many millions that now live in the United States.

We have always rejected your “conquest” or “dominion” over us. In addition to the above, it’s time you treated us as co-equals and full human beings, not as your former “subjects.” Estamos?

Signed,

A simple Me-Xicano Macehual

Firmado,
Un simple Me-Xicano Macehual
